The lasting impact of white teachers who mispronounce minority student names

“Whether you intend to or not, what you’re communicating is this: Your name is different. Foreign. Weird. It’s not worth my time to get it right.” I always try to take a little extra time to make sure I'm pronouncing students' names correctly, even when they insist "it's okay" and want to move on. I ask what they want to be called, and I have them help me practice saying it. It's also really helpful to write on sub plans, next to the names in your roster, phonetic pronunciations of the names. Kids really appreciate when the sub can pronounce their names without even having to ask.
