We are known the world over for being the ugly Americans who demand that people be able to speak English, even when we visit them in their countries, because many people only take foreign languages classes up to the point they've been required to, consider them a joke, and don't try very hard to learn another language. Meanwhile, in much of the rest of the world, people learn their native language, plus English, and often more languages. Partly because a lot of international business and diplomacy requires a knowledge of English. Partly because many of them hope to come here to live and work. But we Americans often don't make the slightest effort to learn the language of a place we may visit. We just expect the world to cater to us. No wonder they see us as "ugly Americans."
