Why Understanding Student Trauma is More Important Than Teaching ‘Grit’

"If a hypothetical classroom of 30 children were based on current demographics in the United States, this is how the students in that classroom would live: Seven would live in poverty, 11 would be non-white, six wouldn’t speak English as a first language, six wouldn’t be reared by their biological parents, one would be homeless, and six would be victims of abuse." 1. My current colleagues and I don't have to deal with most of this. 2. WAY MORE people, especially kids, are dealing with trauma than most people realize. Even more reason for us to personalize learning and offer young people a safe place to learn, grow, and BE when they come to school. 3. Grit doesn't sound very nice. We don't need more grit. Resilience, maybe. But also, how about kindness, acceptance, and forgiveness? (Toward others and toward self.) Let's teach and model more of that.
